JAPAN-PALAU FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE

As the stepping stone to Palau, Airai State is located in the southern region of Babeldaob Island, the second largest island in Micronesia.

The Palau International Airport is located only minutes from the Japan-Palau Friendship bridge to Koror, Palau's provisional capitol.

Babeldoab Island's recently completed highway which encircles the island on both coasts, and is only a short distance from the airport.

Continental Airlines services daily flights to and from Guam and charter flights from Asian cities frequently arrive in Palau.

Before WWII, in the Japanese administration, there were cars in Airai State.  Until the 1960's, when the started building the airport, they transported the vehicles using what they called M-boats, from the U.S. Military, until there were ferry boats.

Once the KB (Koror-Babeldaob) Bridge was completed in 1977, transportation greatly improved.  People living in Babeldaob were now able to start small businesses.  The first built bridge was named the world's longest single span bridge.

The first KB Bridge stood until its collapse in 1996.  During that time, ferry service resumed until a temporary floating bridge was constructed.

The new Japan-Palau Friendship bridge was completed and opened in 2002.
